Slumber Party Barbie kit, with scales and weight loss book
My mate John Alchin just sent me this.
It is a picture of a Slumber Party Barbie set from 1965. It comes complete with:
Pink Satin Pajama Top
Pink Satin Pajama Bottoms
Pink Robe with Sash
Pink Open Toe Heels with Blue Pompons
Pink Scale
How To Lose Weight Book
Pink Curlers (6)
Bobby Pins (6)
Blue Brush & Comb
The scales, which were permanently set at 110lbs, were removed from the 1966 version.

This doesn’t quite make sense. Was this actually on the market? I didn’t think our culture was that much into weight and weight loss back then.
Hi Ashley
Yes it was. You can buy many of the items individually on e-bay!

Dieting in the US has been around since the 1830s, and it was definitely prevalent in the 1960s. My mom used to talk about my grandma’s “black coffee and cigarettes” diet (which was more than a diet, really, it was a way to cope with her life). At some point you should investigate the history of dieting, it’s rather fascinating. It was started as a moral push away from the ‘sin’ of gluttony and excess, and hey, whaddyaknow, it remained that way!
Wow, my mom was 10 years old in 1965, and used to play with Barbies (she still has a ton of her Barbie stuff from then—dream house, tons of clothes). I wonder if she ever knew anyone who had this?
As ridiculous as the scale and weight loss book are, I love love love the satin PJs and robe.
funny… I was recently on another website which had ads from 50s and 60s of Pepsi, “The light refreshment”… “what do slim and trim ladies drink? Pepsi!” I think it was even worse back then than it is now…
