Dieting in the US has been around since the 1830s, and it was definitely prevalent in the 1960s. My mom used to talk about my grandma's "black coffee and cigarettes" diet (which was more than a diet, really, it was a way to cope with her life). At some point you should investigate the history of dieting, it's rather fascinating. It was started as a moral push away from the 'sin' of gluttony and excess, and hey, whaddyaknow, it remained that way!

Wow, my mom was 10 years old in 1965, and used to play with Barbies (she still has a ton of her Barbie stuff from then---dream house, tons of clothes). I wonder if she ever knew anyone who had this?
