My mom used to talk about my grandma's "black coffee and cigarettes" diet (which was more than a diet, really, it was a way to cope with her life). At some point you should investigate the history of dieting, it's rather fascinating. It was started as a moral push away from the 'sin' of gluttony and excess, and hey, whaddyaknow, it remained that way! Dieting in the US has been around since the 1830s, and it was definitely prevalent in the 1960s.
